Is coconut a healthy food? This is a common question many of us have been asking since long. First of all, is coconut healthy food or not? This fruit is very rich in nutrients. From an eating point of view, is coconut healthy food or not?
Well, technically, you could classify them into three categories: those that are good for you, those that are bad for you, and those that have a combination of both. The first category includes refined, processed, and mineral oils; these are also called “white” nuts. The second category contains refined coconut products, such as condensed milk solids, refined sugar, hydrogenated oil (partially hydrogenated vegetable oil), and butter substitutes (such as soy, corn, and sunflower). Finally, the third category includes tree nuts, such as almonds, pecans, cashew nuts, pistachios, peanuts, pistachios, walnuts, hazelnuts, chestnuts, and Shea butter. All these nuts are considered to be good for you or at least good for the skin and heart health.
Tree nuts and peanuts are the only types of nuts considered to be a source of “tropic tree nuts” (tropic meaning tropical). So, is coconut a healthy food or not? As previously mentioned, these nuts are rich in nutrition, but this does not mean they are safe for everyone. They all can cause allergies – though the frequency of such reactions may vary from person to person depending on factors such as genetics, diet, environment, severity of allergies, and so on.
However, one thing is clear – there are some people who are allergic to tree nuts and peanuts and are prone to developing allergic reactions to other types of nuts and/or grains. In fact, one of the most common forms of allergies is to coconut. Thus, is coconut a nut-free diet? As it turns out, not quite. While it is true that there is no documented case of coconut allergy, if you have an allergy to nuts and trees (allergens), then chances are that you may also have an allergy to coconut.
The best way to decide if you have to avoid all coconut products is to take the time to discuss it with your doctor. For example, if you have nut allergies, it is safe to assume that any coconut product will cause an allergic reaction. However, there is good news. There is a line of coconut products available that is free from all nut allergens. As such, is coconut a safe to eat? In short, no.
This does not mean you should totally forego all foods that contain nut allergens, however. It simply means that you must take steps to avoid the possibility of an allergic reaction. Even for those who are not prone to allergic reactions, it can be a challenge to avoid all tree nuts and coconut. However, with a few thoughtful preparations, you can be able to enjoy all the healthy benefits of coconut, while avoiding potential damage from allergic reactions.
First, consider the source. All foods that come from trees all have some risk of causing food allergies. Tree nuts in particular are particularly sensitive, as their proteins are complex and can easily be digested by the body’s enzymes. As such, tree nuts are the most common culprit when it comes to food allergies. This does not mean that all foods from trees can be avoided, but it does mean that careful consideration needs to be taken when choosing and preparing meals.
Second, consider coconut’s hypoallergenic nature. Coconut is highly regarded as a health food in the Orient, where it is used in everything from sauces to ice cream. As such, coconut is particularly well tolerated by most people, even in countries that do not enjoy its taste or aroma. Ingestion of its oils poses very little danger of triggering allergies, whereas other nuts are far more difficult to tolerate. For this reason, it can be a good idea to cook with coconut or at least purchase it as a cooking oil to ensure that you are not continually exposed to potential food allergies.
